This ongoing project emerged from encounters with how new motorway systems in Ireland transform the experience and negotiation of the material fabric of space and landscape. Further research recontextualised disparate discreet Irish motorways within single EuroRoute roads. ROUTE ONE developed into a journey to photograph sites in Spain and Portugal along the European motorway route E01, one of a number of such roads connecting Ireland with continental European destinations.
Structures that are understood and encountered as they work locally are re-evaluated as emerging from complex planning, funding and spatialising concepts framed in a wider international context. Oppositions of territory and flow, temporality and space, geography and historicity all emerge as critical dimensions of these road spaces as tools of an ongoing global process accommodating the interactions of producing and consuming economies.
